Transfering Files Using Mobile Phone Tools (MPT) on the Motorola v710

This tutorial is meant to be used with the Motorola v710. MPT can be found on the CD that comes with the USB adapter for the phone

  1. Fully charge the phone
  2. Install v710 USB Driver. The driver is located on the Mobile Phone Tools CD. Afterwards, reboot.
  3. Install PST 7.11 and apply the patch (included on the zip). You'll have to reboot before and after applying the patch. Keep hitting next until it is finished (for some reason, it tells you everytime it's about to install a new part)
  4. Plug in the phone in and it'll start installing more drivers for the phone. When it asks for the driver, point it to the PST directory (probably in program files)
  5. Open Start -> Programs -> Motorola PST -> Flash and Test Commands
  6. Once it establishes the connection with the phone, the list in the bottom left corner should contain "Motorola P2K, 0, USB." If not, unplug the phone and plug it back in (the connector on the phone is a little shakey)
  7. Click the browse button and point to the image file (it is a .shx file)
  8. Click on "Motorola P2K" on the bottom left and click "Device." It should say something like "Putting phone into flash mode"
  9. The flash button should now be enabled, so click it. The flashing will take several minutes, and after it's done, unplug the phone and reboot both the phone and the computer
  10. Install Mobile Phone Tools (MPT) from the CD then reboot
  11. Connect the phone and start MPT. Run the live update from the menu. Rebooting may be required before it works after updating. Once it's done, it should be able to connect to the phone, and it'll make an interface that looks like your phone
    • If it doesn't work, hit F6 to get to the "General Menu" and go to the second tab called "Communications." Click the "Change Modem" button. Select "Motorola USB modem" and click next. Check "Do not automatically detect the driver" and next will take you to choosing a "Motorola CDMA" under device manager, and "Motorola V710m" in the device model (the 'm' is important). Finish the wizard and try to use MPT again.
  12. Once it connects, the program in MPT that you're going to use to transfer files is Multimedia Studio (MMS). It's on the right little menu of buttons in the middle

The phone can play mp3s as ringtones, so you can make your own or there are 1000 places online where you can download mp3 ringtones for free. I didn’t bother making my own, I just uploaded a few I found. I also uploaded a background. Once you’re in MMS, it’s very user friendly as to where things go.
